How sleep deprivation and stress are connected

No matter how much we meditate, eat right, exercise, and drink plenty of water we still have to deal with one thing that can greatly impact our health and wellbeing: stress.

Stress can have a pretty profound impact on our sleep in both the quantity of sleep we’re getting as well as the overall quality of that sleep. I think we’ve all had a night where we just couldn’t seem to close our eyes because we were so worried about work, family, a relationship, or even finances. This lack of restful, restorative sleep can have some pretty terrible consequences on our day-to-day lives, which is why most experts agree that we need 7-9 hours of sleep a night to stay healthy and face life’s challenges.

The problem, however, is that we are not getting the amount of sleep we need. In fact, the CDC released a report stating that 35.2% of adults in the United States don’t get the minimum recommended amount of sleep each night. This lack of sleep isn’t just an annoyance, it can be an important risk factor for a host of nasty physical and mental health problems.

Sleep deprivation effects

How many can you relate to? Low energy, negative mood or mood swings, inability to concentrate on tasks, decreased memory, these are all symptoms of sleep deprivation. While even one night of less-than-stellar sleep can really put a damper on your day, these effects intensify and worsen the longer you go without proper sleep.

In addition, the CDC has recognized more than 7 conditions that sleep-deprived people are much more likely to suffer from:

  • Depression
  • Arthritis
  • Obesity
  • Heart diseas
  • Stroke
  • Diabetes
  • Kidney disease

The link between stress and sleep

Even though we usually think about stress as a negative thing we need to avoid, it’s purpose was to help us learn how to adapt to difficult or sometimes dangerous situations.

Stress stimulates our autonomic nervous system (the one we can’t control) to get the heart to pump more blood to the body and for the lungs to take in more oxygen, both things needed to get out of dodge if in a dangerous situation. Where this system works really well when running from a lion or bear, it doesn’t work as well in a more modern setting where stressors can include work or relationships.

Because our bodies are almost constantly in overdrive it makes it almost impossible for us to turn our brains off and catch some zzz’s.

What can we do about it

Since we know that stress and sleep are closely linked, the obvious thing for us to try would be to reduce the level of stress we experience in our day-to-day. However, it's not like we can put our jobs, family commitments, kids, or relationships on hold while we try and improve our sleep quality either.
